The Canfor Elko Sawmill was purchased by Canfor, along with the other Tembec operations Canal Flats and Woodlands, in November of 2011. Built in 1969 by Crowsnest Industries the mill was purchased by Crestbrook in 1983 and then absorbed by Tembec when it bought Crestbrook in 1999. Elko has 160 members at the mill while the Woodlands group is comprised of 24 members from the Cranbrook Garage, Skookumchuk Chipper and Cranbrook, Creston and Canal Flats Woodlands Division.
Canfor, representing Radium, Elko and the Woodlands Divisions has recently rejoined the IFLRA (Interior Forest Labour Relations Association) in preparation for 2018 Bargaining.
Elko's new 988 Loader. All three mills at Elko, Canal Flats and Radium have the new loaders
The Barko Crane, stationed at the south end of the Elko Sawmill Logdeck sorting logs for over a decade, was carried off by the Letourneau Log Loader over the November 24 weekend as Elko begins the transformation to the Sawmill that will see it go to CTL (Cut-to-Length) logs, eliminating four jobs (eight over two shifts) on the log deck. The Letourneau itself will also become redundant later next year as the short logs will be unloaded by a new 988 Loader.
The Cranbrook Planermill caught fire last night - November 1 - and burned the majority of it to the ground. No one was reported hurt in the blaze. Cranbrook firefighters controlled and contained the fire that burned throughout the night. Tembec still owned the property and had begun selling off the parts of the Planer and dismantling it. The Kilns along with the Fingerjoint Mill were not involved in the blaze. The cause is still under investigation. The Tembec Cranbrook Planer recently severed the remaining workers with the initial group that was laid-off getting the last of their severance July 2013. Constructed in the early 1960's by Crestbrook, the site included the Planer and Sawmill before it closed in 1998.
